Rapid KL, a public transportation company in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has installed an on-board video surveillance system on its buses to enhance passenger safety and service quality. However, traditional wired networks can hardly meet the networking requirements for mobile scenarios like buses. Therefore, the company decided to introduce industrial-grade 4G LTE wireless routers to achieve stable and reliable transmission of on-board surveillance data.

After market research and product testing, Rapid KL finally selected KEY-IOT's SR500 dual-port 4G router. This router adopts a Qualcomm industrial-grade 4G multi-network communication module, supports mainstream global 4G LTE network standards, and provides a maximum internet access rate of 150 Mbps, fully meeting the bandwidth requirements for real-time transmission of high-definition video.

An on-board video surveillance system typically consists of multiple high-definition cameras, a digital video recorder (DVR), display screens, and other devices. The cameras are responsible for capturing video images inside and outside the vehicle, the DVR for storage and management, and the display screens for real-time viewing and playback.

The SR500 router provides two 100M Ethernet LAN ports that can simultaneously connect to the DVR and display. The router's built-in hardware encryption engine and various VPN protocols (such as IPSec, OpenVPN, PPTP/L2TP, etc.) enable end-to-end encrypted transmission of video data, preventing leakage of sensitive information.

At the same time, the SR500 supports simultaneous online access of wired and wireless networks and intelligent switching between them. When the 4G network signal is unstable, it can automatically switch to the on-board WiFi network for data transmission, greatly improving network availability.

Rapid KL has deployed a video surveillance management platform at its dispatch center to receive surveillance data from all buses in real-time via the 4G network for centralized management and storage. Dispatchers can check the situation inside the vehicles at any time to promptly detect and handle various emergencies, such as passenger disputes, uncivilized behavior, and suspicious persons.

In addition, Rapid KL makes full use of the SR500's GPS positioning and data collection functions to track vehicle operation trajectories, speed, fuel consumption, and other information in real-time, optimizing route planning and scheduling to improve operational efficiency.

The SR500 features a fully industrial design with a metal casing for high reliability, suitable for harsh working environments on buses, such as vibration, high/low temperatures, and humidity. It supports a wide range of DC 5~36V power supply and has a built-in watchdog function for self-recovery from failures without manual intervention.

In terms of deployment and implementation, the SR500 supports various network configuration methods, such as web interface, SSH/Telnet command line, TR069/SNMP centralized management, etc., allowing flexible selection based on actual applications. It comes with the open-source OpenWrt operating system and provides a secondary development package and detailed API guide for easy customization by customers.

The project manager of Rapid KL said: "The KEY-IOT SR500 router is stable in performance and rich in functions, providing our on-board video surveillance system with a reliable and steady wireless transmission channel. At the same time, KEY-IOT also offers professional technical support services, making the project implementation very smooth."

After more than a year of stable operation, this on-board video surveillance system has greatly enhanced the safety of Rapid KL buses, winning wide acclaim from passengers. With the advent of the 5G era, KEY-IOT is also actively developing 5G vehicle-mounted routers to provide faster and more reliable wireless transmission solutions for future intelligent transportation.

Thanks to advanced industrial internet technologies, vehicle-mounted wireless routers represented by KEY-IOT's SR500 are being adopted by more and more public transportation and logistics companies. The convergence of 4G/5G and video surveillance plays a crucial role in improving user experience, ensuring the safety of life and property, and promoting the intelligent development of the industry. It is believed that wireless interconnection technology will shine in even broader fields in the near future.
